Door seals for Tesla, a solution to reduce noise?

Door seals for Tesla Model 3 and Model Y promise to improve soundproofing, reduce dirt and dust inside doors, and make closing noise more muffled.

Original Model 3 and Y are equipped with only a single gasket while many other cars have 2 joints on each door. I never found the Model 3 or Y very quiet on the road so I wanted to try this solution.

I have tested these three points for you to check as factually as possible if these benefits are present or not. Installation, rolling noise, sound of closing doors and cleanliness of the interior of the doors, you will know everything.

Installation of seals:

Nothing very complicated, it takes about 1/2 hour for the installation of the whole, take your time and respect the important steps:

  • Clean the seal installation area thoroughly
  • Apply the primer to improve the bonding, without overflowing because it makes traces
  • Lay the joints straight so that it is clean

Test 1: Sound when doors close

I tested by closing the doors several times without the joints and then with the seals in place. You will make up your own mind with the video, but for me the door seals for Tesla Model 3 and Model Y offer a slightly more muted closing noise. The doors of your car close a hair quieter, or at least with a less metallic noise.

Test 2: Soundproofing on the road

The test was carried out on the same stretch of motorway, at 110km/h, without and with the joints. The measurements are made with a db measurement application, and with my ears.

The difference is small, 1db on average but to the ear and trying not to be influenced by the installation of the seals: The difference is not huge in terms of noise volume, the rolling noise itself does not change, on the other hand the air noise decreases, overall the sound seems more serious, more muffled in the car. It’s not huge but I think there is a gain. Be careful, this does not turn the car into a Rolls Royce 🙂 either.

Test 3: Cleanliness of door interiors

I still have to give me a little time to confirm this point but I am confident since the joints close the openings around the doors, it will leave much less room for water and dust to pass.

Conclusion of the test:

In summary, the door seals for Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are a useful accessory that improves (a little) soundproofing, reduces dirt inside doors and makes closing noise (a little too) more muffled.

Areas for improvement:

  • Seals are visible when the door is open, especially on white
  • The improvement in soundproofing is not huge
  • You have to take your time for installation

Positives:

  • The seals appear to be original
  • Sticks well
  • Effective in making closing noise more muted
  • Effective in limiting dirt
