To take concrete examples, we will compare the costs of charging at home through the most used subscriptions, EDF basic Blue tariff and tariff with off-peak hours. I deliberately discarded the Tempo offers which are not very widespread and complicated to compare with their 6 different rates depending on the day.

How much does it cost to charge a Tesla Model 3 or Y Propulsion?

We will consider a full theoretical load from 0 to 100%, which represents an amount of energy of about 60 kWh.

In 2022 charging your Tesla Propulsion cost you between 8.8 and 11 € euros depending on your subscription:

  • 2022: EDF Base: 0.1740 * 60 = 10.44 €
  • 2022: EDF peak hours: 0.1841 * 60 = 11.04 €
  • 2022: EDF off-peak hours: 0.1470 * 60 = 8.82 €

In 2023 following the increase you will now have to pay 9.7 to 13.4 € for the same recharge:

  • 2023: EDF Base: 0.2062 * 60 = 12.37 €
  • 2023: EDF peak hours: 0.2228 * 60 = 13.37 €
  • 2023: EDF off-peak hours: 0.1615 * 60 = 9.69 €

In these cases, for the Model 3 and Y Propulsion the additional cost ranges from 0.9 to 2.3 € per recharge. This is not negligible compared to the total cost.

How much does it cost to charge a Tesla Model 3 or Y Long Range or Performance?

Again, we will consider a full theoretical charge of 0 to 100%, which represents an amount of energy of about 78 kWh with these batteries a little larger than on entry-level cars.

In 2022 the charging of your Tesla 3 or Y LR or Performance cost you between 11.5 and 14.3 € euros depending on your subscription:

  • 2022: EDF Base: 0.1740 * 78 = 13.57 €
  • 2022: EDF peak hours: 0.1841 * 78 = 14.35 €
  • 2022: EDF off-peak hours: 0.1470 * 78 = 11.46 €

In 2023 following the increase you will now have to pay 12.6 to 16 € for the same recharge:

  • 2023: EDF Base: 0.2062 * 78 = 16.08 €
  • 2023: EDF peak hours: 0.2228 * 78 = 17.37 €
  • 2023: EDF off-peak hours: 0.1615 * 78 = 12.60 €

In these cases, for the Model 3 and Y LR or Performance the additional cost ranges from 1.1 to 3 € per recharge.

How much does it cost to charge a Tesla Model S or X Plaid or Long Range?

Again, we will consider a full theoretical load from 0 to 100%, which represents an amount of energy of about 100 kWh.

In 2022 charging your Tesla S or X Plaid or LR cost you between 14.7 and 18.4 € euros depending on your subscription:

  • 2022: EDF Base: 0.1740 * 100 = 17.40 €
  • 2022: EDF peak hours: 0.1841 * 100 = 18.41 €
  • 2022: EDF off-peak hours: 0.1470 * 100 = 14.70 €

In 2023 following the increase, you will now have to pay 16.1 to 22.28 € for the same recharge:

  • 2023: EDF Base: 0.2062 * 100 = 20.62 €
  • 2023: EDF peak hours: 0.2228 * 100 = 22.28 €
  • 2023: EDF off-peak hours: 0.1615 * 100 = 16.15 €

In these cases, for Model S and X Plaid or LR the additional cost ranges from 1.4 to 3.9 € per recharge.

TeslaPimp’s opinion:

A rate increase is never good news, the impact on the bill will be significant if you use electricity to heat your home, there is no doubt about that. However, going back to our battery-powered cars, I consider it still very interesting, not to say gift.

With 9 to 22 Euros you will travel 250 to 450 km with cars from 300 to 1000 horsepower. On average 4 Euros for 100 km maybe 5 € adding the different losses, let’s be pessimistic by pushing up to 6 € in the worst winter conditions. That’s just 2 or 3 litres of gasoline.

Of course once at Superchargers the price is quite different, often double or triple the price of electricity at home, it is sometimes the same for other public terminals. Recharging from 0 to 100% a Model S at Ionity will be charged 69 €. 45€ at Tesla is expensive but it is not a daily use, unless you drive 600 or 800km a day on the highway. What matters is the amount spent at the end of the year, not the price of a full unit.
